On Thursday, April 15, twelve Mount Carmel students traveled two hours to Covington, Kentucky to participate in a math tournament. This is the 31st year of the tournament,
which is sponsored by Calvary Christian School, but only the fourth consecutive year Mt. Carmel students have taken part. Mt. Carmel was competing against six other Christian schools, with a total of about 130 contestants. Students have the opportunity to choose three out of five categories in which to compete; the options were Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Advanced Math, and Calculus. The students representing Mt. Carmel did very well; they won their division trophy, and also placed higher than two schools in higher divisions. (the division in which the school was placed was determined based on the number of students that were representing the school) Justin Moon took first place over all students participating in Algebra 1, and Ivan Jang placed third overall in Algebra 2. Several other students won individual honors as they competed in their selected categories – plus a relay event. Congratulations to the math team on all of their accomplishments!

The Mount Carmel Crusaders Volleyball and Basketball teams competed in the 2010 KCSAA State Tournament, held February 26th and 27th in Lexington, Kentucky. Both teams were placed in the AA bracket, which consisted of 13 teams in volleyball and 16 teams in basketball. Coach Paul Kline and the the Lady Crusaders earned a fourth place finish out of 13 teams and received a trophy for their achievement. The basketball team did not place in their bracket, but did display great talent and exciting potential for next season.
The Mount Carmel Lady Crusaders’ first match of the tournament was against London Christian Academy. The Crusaders handily defeated the Eagles in two sets: 25-16, 25-8. Leading the way for the girls were Julie Kuk (5 aces, 6 kills), Lumee Nishikawa (5 aces, 10 assists, 5 kills), and Senior Pan Lavangkoolphasit who went 19 for 19 (100%) in her serves.
The second volleyball match of the day was against the Heart for Christ Panthers. The Crusaders lost the first set, 21-25, but, in dramatic fashion, recovered to win the final
two sets (25-16, 15-11) and took the match. Nishikawa had 5 aces, Kuk had 8 kills, and Lavangkoolphasit had 8 assists. These two victories kept the girls in the winners’ bracket and advanced them on to the second day of tournament action.
The second day of competition presented the Lady Crusaders with some difficult challenges. They fell in their first match of the day to the Pendleton Praisers in two sets: 18-25, 20-25. The team rebounded to defeat LJCA in two sets (21-19, 21-13) in which Nishikawa had 6 aces, but then fell once more in a match against Clay’s Mill Road in two sets: 10-21, 11-21. This caused the Lady Crusaders to finish in second place in the consolation bracket, and fourth place overall.
In basketball, the boys’ first game was a match against the Christian Education Consortium. Finding themselves behind at halftime, the Crusaders charged back to come within one point with seconds left. A foul called on Coty Stamper while pursuing a loose ball gave CEC the advantage and the Crusaders were unable to recover, losing 56-57. Coty Stamper had a phenomenal game with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Lawrence Huff was the second leading scorer with 16, while Sangyoon Lee had 6 and Senior Seung-Jae Lee had 5.
The double-elimination format of the tournament put the basketball team in a must-win situation. In their second game of the day, they faced Bourbon Christian Academy. In this defensive battle, the Crusaders pulled through with the win, 31-27. Lawrence Huff was the leading scorer with 15 points, while Stamper had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Senior Ryan White added 8 boards.
The Crusaders next challenge was the Christian Academy of Lawrenceburg. Coach Paul Kline later commented that this game was the team’s best of the season. Unfortunately, in a hard fought game, the Crusaders fell, 44-42, and were eliminated from the tournament. Huff stunned the crowd with 27 points. White had 8 rebounds and Stamper had 2 steals. Congratulations to the Mount Carmel boys’ basketball team for a great season.

On the boys’ side, Coty Stamper (1st Team), Sangyoon Lee (2nd Team), and Lawrence Huff (honorable mention) all qualified for regional play. The Regional All-Star games will be held on Saturday, March 13 in Somerset, Kentucky.

Mount Carmel High School expanded its sports program for the 2009 school year by organizing a co-ed soccer team to take part in a short three-game season that would
both challenge the student’s soccer skills, and determine if there was interest in making soccer a permanent program at Mount Carmel. Head Coach Mr. Kevin Munson said, “We had a great turn-out and lots of interest in continuing to have a team in the future. True to our expectations, our students showed great sportsmanship and athleticism throughout long practice hours and competitive games.”
The season included three away games, beginning with a match against Landmark Christian Academy on September 11. With only a few weeks of practice, the Mount Carmel Crusaders showed good teamwork and determination early, but trailed 2-1 at the half. The Crusaders opened the second half with two more goals to take a 3-2 lead, but soon gave up another Landmark goal, bringing the score to a 3-3 tie. With only a few minutes remaining, the opposing team scored another goal which the Crusaders could not match as the time expired, and the game ended in a 4-3 loss.
The second game was against Somerset Christian School in Elizabethtown, Kentucky on Saturday, October 17. Though another hard-fought battle, the Crusaders dropped the match by a score of 2-1
.
The Crusaders’ final match was a rescheduled game against Cumberland Christian School on Thursday, October 22. The Crusaders took control of the game early and defeated their opponent by a score of 7-1.
The team showed much improvement over the course of the season, and began to develop good team chemistry. The two soccer players who will not return to the team next year are Seniors Ryan White (Kentucky) and Pan Lavangkoolphasit (Thailand). Junior Sangyoon Lee (Korea) was the leading scorer on the season with five goals.
